ICONIC MOMENTS

THE DENTIST'S CHAIR

NATIONAL REDEMPTION

The Dentist's Chair incident and subsequent celebration remain one of Paul Gascoigne and English football's most iconic moments.

In May 1996, following a pre-Euro 96 friendly game in Hong Kong, Gazza and several of Terry Venables' squad headed for a night out which culminated in several players, including Gazza, being pictured with their shirt ripped open, lying back in a dentist chair in the bar having booze poured into their mouths.

Pictures from the night out made it to the British tabloids, sparking outrage across the nation. The press described the midfield maestro as “drunk oaf with no pride” under the headline “Disgracefool”, little did they know that the reaction would inspire genius!

So many Jokes, So many Snears.

THE MERCURIAL MAGICIAN

In England’s second game of Euro 96, at Wembley against the old enemy Scotland, moments after David Seaman had saved Gary McAllister's penalty kick, Gazza received the ball outside the area from Darren Anderton, chipped the ball over Colin Hendry’s head before changing direction leaving Hendry wrong footed and falling, as the ball dropped, Gascoigne volleyed the ball passed his club team mate Andy Goram into the net to put England 2-0 and send Cool Britannia into over drive.

Gazza Good as Before.

THE DENTIST'S CHAIR

Gascoigne then sprinted to a position off the field next to the upright and lay on the floor whilst his team mates, led by Jamie Redknapp and Steve McManaman sprayed water into his mouth from a classic Lucozade bottle.

The dentist's chair celebration. A legacy created. It’s Coming Home.
